AMD Ryzen AM5: CPU List

Joe Cohen

AMD 9000 Series

AMD’s Ryzen AM5 processors are a popular choice for building powerful and efficient PCs. We’ve put together a list of every AM5 processor released (so far) with some basic information on each. Here’s what you need to know about them.

Everything You Need to Know About AM5 CPUs

What’s the Difference Between AM5 and Older AMD CPUs?

AM5 is completely incompatible with all prior generations of AMD sockets, so your CPU and/or your motherboard will not be able to be re-used. Physically, there’s a dramatic change with the shift to AM5 in that the pins are no longer on the bottom of the chip. Like Intel, AMD has gone to the Land Grid Array (LGA) format with the pins on the motherboard. AM5 also brings several new features to AMD CPUs, including:

  • Support for DDR5 memory
  • Support for PCIe 5.0
  • A more powerful integrated graphics solution

Sample Of The Top AM5 Processors

Here’s a sample of some of the more popular AMD Ryzen AM5 processors:

ModelCores/ThreadsBase Clock SpeedMax Turbo Clock SpeedTDP
Ryzen 9 7950X16/324.5 GHz5.7 GHz170W
Ryzen 9 7900X12/244.7 GHz5.6 GHz170W
Ryzen 7 7700X8/164.5 GHz5.4 GHz105W
Ryzen 5 7600X6/124.7 GHz5.3 GHz105W

Each of the chips above represents a different notch in performance class/power. You can see how the core counts compare across the line and how the power requirements shift up dramatically.

What Does TDP Mean?

TDP (Thermal Design Power) is a measure of how much heat a CPU generates under load. Higher TDPs generally mean more powerful CPUs, but they also require more capable cooling solutions.

Which AM5 CPU is Right for You?

The best AM5 CPU for you will depend on your budget and your needs. If you’re a gamer or a power user, then a Ryzen 9 or Ryzen 7 processor might be the best fit. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more affordable option, a Ryzen 5 CPU would be a good choice. Some of this will depend on what your other components are to make sure you’re maximizing the overall build. Also, pick the game you want to play that has the highest requirements and look on different forums to see what chip people recommend using for it.

Overview of AMD Ryzen AM5 CPUs

AMD has recently launched the AM5 socket, which is a new platform for its processors. The AM5 socket is exclusively designed for AMD Ryzen 7000 series and is based on the latest Zen 4 architecture. The AM5 platform is a significant upgrade in terms of performance, as it supports advanced features such as PCIe® 5.0 and DDR5 memory on select motherboards. The introduction of the AM5 socket is a great news for enthusiasts and gamers who are looking for an improved gaming experience.

The Future Of AM5

AMD has already announced that the next generation of chips they’re releasing (the Ryzen 8000 and 9000 series) will all be on the AM5 platform.

What’s Been Released

  • Ryzen 7 8700G, with peak speeds and advanced performance
  • Ryzen 5 8600G, balancing cost and capability

These chips are not really what people are most interested in on the 8000 series, but rather, these are just the options with integrated graphics that AMD is showcasing for lower-end builds.
